HECSE Winter Summit and Annual Meeting January 27-30, 2010
HECSE will hold the 2010 Winter Summit and Annual Meeting on January 27-30 at the Embassy Suites Downtown and on the Hill in Washington, DC.

Registration End Date: January 19th, 2010
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at the Embassy Suites Hotel (Downtown). The HECSE Executive Board will meet from 2:00-4:00 p.m. The opening Summit session will begin at 4:00 p.m. Drinks in the hotel lobby will follow at 6:00 p.m. Dinner group participants will meet at the front desk at 7:00 p.m. (Restaurant details to follow).
At the opening session Ben Lignugaris/Kraft, HECSE President, will welcome participants and provide a meeting overview, and Jane West, HECSE Legislative Consultant, will interview a legislative staffer involved in disability legislation (e.g., Sharon Lewis, legislative staffer for Congressman Miller or a member of Obama administration involved with disability issues). During the opening session Summit attendees will also introduce themselves and will have the opportunity to announce faculty searches and/or fellowship opportunities. If distributing handouts, please bring 65 copies of your materials.
Wednesday Small-group dinners. . Meeting attendees are encouraged to participate in dinner discussion groups scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday nights. Wednesday groups will discuss selected topics in leadership and teacher preparation.
Thursday, January 28, 2010. The session will start at 8:30 a.m. Morning sessions will feature a briefing by Dr. Deborah Smith on the SEFNA study followed by Jane West’s preparation for hill visits with Congressional education staffers. We are hoping to include key points from the SEFNA study in the talking points for your Hill visit so attendance at both these sessions is strongly encouraged.
Thursday Small group dinners. Thursday’s dinner conversations will focus on topics of interest to department chairs and academic faculty members. Participants are encouraged to pose questions in advance, share resources, and/or offer to facilitate the discussion.
NOTE: Members are strongly encouraged to call their Congressional representatives' offices now to schedule afternoon appointments (January 28th 1:00-4:00 p.m.) with the education staffers. A Hill de-briefing session will be held at the hotel from 5:30-7:00 p.m. followed by small topical dinner groups. Dinner groups will meet at the front desk 7:00 p.m. (details to follow).
Friday, January 29, 2010. Today’s session will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Capitol Hill (Location TBD). The group will meet with John Easton, IES Director, hear from Congressional staff on important legislation, get an update on the GPRA personnel preparation evaluation (John Rice and Tom Fiore), and discuss OSEP Leadership Grants with Larry Wexler, Director of OSERS’ Research to Practice Division.
Saturday, January 30, 2010. The annual HECSE Business Meeting will be held from 8:30 -11:30 a.m. The agenda will include standing committee and dinner group reports, a report from Chad Rose, the current HECSE virtual intern, and presentation of a plaque honoring Bob Gilmore for his years of leadership service.
NOTE: The Business Meeting is an important part of HECSE’s ongoing work, please plan to attend. Saturday’s session will start earlier this year; we will adjourn promptly at 11:30 a.m. to accommodate attendee travel or sightseeing plans. Attendees are encouraged to book return flights after 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
